Chapter 33: Of the Last Judgment
1. God has appointed a day in which he will judge the world in righteousness by Jesus Christ, to whom all power and judgment is given to by the Father. In that day, not only the apostate angels will be judged, but also all persons that have lived on the earth will appear before the tribunal of Christ to give an account of their thoughts, words, and deeds and to receive judgement according to what they have done in the body, whether good or evil.
2. The purpose of God’s appointing this day is the manifestation of 1) the glory of his mercy, in the eternal salvation of the elect, and 2) his justice, in the damnation of the reprobate, who are wicked and disobedient. After this the righteous will go into everlasting life and receive that fullness of joy and refreshment that come from the presence of the Lord. But the wicked, who know not God and do not obey the Gospel of Jesus Christ, will be cast into eternal torments and will be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his power.
3. Christ would have us to be certainly persuaded that there will be a day of judgment, both to deter all people from sin and for the greater consolation of the godly in their adversity. He makes that day unknown to mankind, so that they may shake off all worldly security and be always watchful, because they do not know when the Lord will come, and may be always prepared to say, “Come Lord Jesus, come quickly, Amen.”
